Terrain
Forest and farm tracks. Quiet country lanes and some rocky terrain.
High forested hills intersected by dramatic gorges; open plateaux.

On Route
Much of the area's fame is based on its natural features, notably water erosion of the limestone plateaux.
** Magnificent Gorges of the Tarn and Jonte.
** Caves such as the Aven Armand with its astonishing concretions.
** The area is rich in birds (96 species observed) with birds of prey including golden and short-toed eagles, the griffon vulture and peregrine falcon.
* Fauna. Primitive breeds of sheep can still be seen grazing sparse pastures. The forests of the Cévennes contain deer and boar, and occassionally otters can be seen in the mountain rivers.
* Flora. This area is noted for its outstanding flowers, particularly orchids on the limestone causses.
