And a hearty salutation to our newcomers, with a promise of the unique magic of Italy, excellent company, delicious cuisine, fascinating experiences and the most exquisite Operas imaginable!

DAY 2 - PARIS/FLORENCE - SATURDAY 12 JUNE

Arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport at 06h30 and connect flight AF 5040 to Florence, departing Paris at 09h55, and arriving in Florence at 11h50. Here you are warmly welcomed by our Italian representatives and transferred by air-conditioned coach to a centrally situated 4* Hotel Pierre to drop off your luggage (check-in to European hotels is not before 14h00 - however, you are welcome to drop off your luggage with the hotel Concierge while you go out to explore this beautiful and captivating city).

Florence

The entire city of Florence is an art-lover's dream! Known as Firenze by the locals, this is the city that gave birth to the Renaissance. A huge number of Renaissance works have remained in the city where they were created; many paintings, statues and whole buildings, such as the Palazzo Pitti, were bequeathed to the people of Florence by the Medici's, ensuring that the family collections remained intact.

No city in Italy can match Florence's astounding artistic wealth. Important paintings and sculptures are everywhere, and art scholars and connoisseurs have been investigating these works for hundreds of years. But what makes the art of Florence a revelation to the ordinary sightseer is a simple fact that scholarship often ignores: most of Florence's art is just plain beautiful!

This evening a "Welcome Dinner" is held in your honour at a carefully selected restaurant near to the hotel. Return to your hotel for overnight.

DAY 3 - FLORENCE - SUNDAY 13 JUNE

Meet your private guide after breakfast this morning and depart on a fascinating discovery of the historical centre of Florence, including the Piazza del Duomo with the Cathedral, Giotto's Belltower, the Baptistery and the Piazza della Signoria.

Lunch at leisure before visiting the Uffizi Museum this afternoon at a pre-booked time (no queuing).

Your evening is at leisure to enjoy as you wish. Overnight at your hotel.

DAY 4 - FLORENCE - MONDAY 14 JUNE

After breakfast this morning, your day is free to explore, "shop till you drop", sip an espresso on a local piazza and watch the passing parade, or simply relax. We can highly recommend a visit with Chris Meintjes to the nearby town of Fiesole (easily accessible by local bus).

This evening, transfer by bus to the Teatro Comunale where tonight's performance of VOLO DI NOTTE/IL PRIGIONIERO commences at 20h30 (part of the Festival del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino). Afterwards you are transferred by bus back to your hotel for overnight.

DAY 5 - FLORENCE/PARMA - TUESDAY 15 JUNE

This morning after breakfast, bid farewell to majestic Florence and transfer to Parma, where you are accommodated in a centrally located 4* Hotel Toscanini.

Parma

Dignified, delightful Parma stands on the banks of a tributary of the River Po. There is no better place to become a connoisseur of "parmigiano" (Parmesan), the hard, sharp flavoured cheese, than in Parma, where the cheese is made. It is a medium-sized city that enjoys a cooler, fresher climate than the other towns in the muggy Po Valley. The history of Parma is full of interesting personalities. Napoleon's widow, Marie Louise, was ceded this city after her husband's death. Despite her reputation for immodest behaviour, she did good things for Parma, building roads and bridges and founding orphanages and public institutions. She also founded the picture gallery (open daily till 13h45 - entrance fee charged) in the 16th century, Palazzo della Pilotta, which contains four great canvases by master painter, Correggio.

This afternoon enjoy a guided tour of Parma, including the Duomo, Battistero, Teatro Farnese and Toscanini's birthplace.

We recommend an early dinner at leisure before this evening's performance (part of the Verdi Festival) of IL CORSARO, which commences at 20h00. Return to your hotel for overnight.

DAY 6 - PARMA - WEDNESDAY 16 JUNE

After breakfast, meet your guide at the hotel reception for this morning's visit to an authentic Formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano farm (parmesan cheese), including a cheese tasting. Afterwards, visit a Culatello ham factory in Polesine Parmense.

Dine this evening at a typical Parma restaurant, which boasts local specialities. Afterwards return to your hotel for overnight.

DAY 7 - PARMA/MILAN - THURSDAY 17 JUNE

Check out of your hotel this morning and transfer to Milan. En-route, stop at Busseto to acquaint yourselves with the Verdi sites, including Teatro Verdi, Salone Barezzi and Palazzo Orlandi. Enjoy lunch at the famous Ristorante I Due Foscari, owned by tenor Bergonzi.

On arrival in Milan, check in to 4* Hotel de la Ville. The remainder of your evening is at leisure.

Overnight at Hotel de la Ville.

Milan

Today Milan is a modern city, despite the fact that its history as a capital city goes back at least 2,500 years. If you are wondering why so little seems to have survived from Milan's antiquity, the answer is simple - war. Three times in the city's history partial or total destruction has followed conflict - in AD 539, 1157 and 1944. Nevertheless, Milan and other cities of Lombardy have not lost their independence and their hatred of domination. Nowhere in Italy was the partisan insurrection against Mussolini (to whom they first gave power) and the German regime better organised or more successful. Milan was liberated from the Germans by its own partisan organisation before the entrance of Allied troops; escaping Allied prisoners could find sanctuary there when fighting was still going on far to the south.

Centre of fashion, business and - in recent years - political scandal, Milan has a bustling, businesslike feel about it. It is smart rather than attractive, a city of wealth as opposed to imagination, the heart of the Italian economy. Today it is the place to see Italy at its most stylish.

DAY 8 - MILAN - FRIDAY 18 JUNE

Meet your private guide at the hotel's reception after breakfast this morning and embark on a tour of Milan, including a visit to Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper".

The remainder of your day is at leisure to shop in this bustling "fashion capital" of the world.

This evening, you are transferred to Teatro degli Arcimboldi for this evening's premier performance of FEDORA, commencing at 20h00. At present time, Placido Domingo is scheduled to sing the role of 'Loris" in this production.

Return to your hotel for overnight.

DAY 9 - MILAN/GENOA - SATURDAY 19 JUNE

Breakfast. Check out of your hotel and transfer to Genoa. Upon arrival you are taken on a guided walking tour of the historical centre of the city, nominated by the European Union as this year's European Capital of Culture. You are accommodated at centrally situated 4* Hotel Bristol.

Genoa

Genoa is on a strip of land, a half-moon between the mountains and sea. This city has been a great maritime centre rivalling Venice for many years. Previously the capital of Piedmonte, it is now the principal city of the region of Liguria. Thanks to its position of wealth and influence, Genoa has many patrician villas and palaces, and fine art collections in her museums. Today Genoa is a bustling city, an international port for goods and passengers, and a centre of research and technology. Evocative seaside landscapes such as the Porto Antico is a frame to Europe's largest Aquarium and the new Museum of the Sea and Navigation. The year 2004 offers a rich, diversified calendar that features art exhibits, dance recitals, scientific conferences and theatre performances, avant-garde architecture and international concerts.

At 15h30, the performance of NABUCCO commences at the Teatro Carlo Felice. Afterwards, return to your hotel for an evening at leisure and overnight.

DAY 10 - GENOA - SUNDAY 20 JUNE

Today is at leisure to immerse yourselves in this delightful town and discover the Museums (both old and new) at your own pace. An "Age of Rubens: Genoese Homes, Patrons and Collectors" exhibition is to be held at the Palazzo Ducale from March to July, where you can experience the most important works of Rubens, Van Dyck, Tintoretto, Brueghel, Caravaggio, Strozzi and Titian. The exhibition will show the paintings as they were kept in the fabulous Genoese private collections of the 17th century, so that the visitors feel as if they are in a private Genoese house of that splendid era.

This evening enjoy your "Farewell Dinner" at a typical Genoese restaurant serving local specialities.

DAY 11 - GENOA/PARIS - MONDAY 21 JUNE

Check out of your hotel by midday today. Transfer to Genoa Airport in time to check-in for your flights via Paris to Johannesburg. Please make sure that your luggage is checked through directly to Johannesburg and that you are in possession of two boarding passes - one Genoa/Paris and the other Paris/Johannesburg. Flight AF 5844 departs Genoa at 18h30, arriving in Paris at 20h05. Flight AF990 departs Paris at 23h15 and a very late dinner is served on board.

DAY 12 - JOHANNESBURG - TUESDAY 22 JUNE

12th century Palazzo Sasso, once the official residence of the aristocratic Sasso family, is now the kind of deluxe retreat that attracts the rather classier world traveller, or perhaps Placido Domingo, giving his vocal chords a bit of sea air.  It is an eyrie of style and comfort.  Gore Vidal once described the view from this hotel as ìthe most beautiful in the worldî.
On one side the icy blue waters of the Golfo di Salerno stretch to the horizon, while to the east, a cluster of mountains dive precipitously down to the waterís edge.  Examine it from all angles ñ lunch on the terrace, a glass of champagne in the rooftop Jacuzzi, even glimpsed from the bedroom window ñ thereís just no faulting it!
Inside the marble floors and Moorish archways give this compact hotel a sense of timeless elegance.
Rosselliniís restaurant is gunning for its first Michelin star and they seem to be going about it in the right way.  Chef Antonio Genovese makes the most of excellent regional produce with dishes like risotto with sea bass, clams and peas scented with thyme and lemon, and basil dressing, or roasted baby john dory on a bed of dried fennel with pan-fried squid.
