On Route

Much of the area's fame is based on its natural features, notably water erosion of the limestone plateaux.

** Magnificent Gorges of the Tarn and Jonte.

** Caves such as the Aven Armand with its astonishing concretions.

** The area is rich in birds (96 species observed) with birds of prey including golden and short-toed eagles, the griffon vulture and peregrine falcon.

* Fauna. Primitive breeds of sheep can still be seen grazing sparse pastures. The forests of the Cévennes contain deer and boar, and occassionally otters can be seen in the mountain rivers.

* Flora. This area is noted for its outstanding flowers, particularly orchids on the limestone causses.
